Bamboo Flooring Maintenance
The most important tip to keeping a bamboo floor looking its best year after year is to keep it clean. Just like with hard woods, bamboo can be scratched by even a thin layer of dirt. Sand on the surface that gets ground in and scratched with foot traffic will quickly dull finishes.
Indoor bamboo floors should never remain soaked. Spills should be absorbed as soon as possible. Also, when damp mopping, cleaning water should be soaked back up and the floor can even be dried with a towel.
To prevent excessive wear, high traffic areas can be covered with area rugs. It is also a good idea to place door mats inside and outside doors to collect dirt from shoes as people enter the room.
Never drag furniture or other items across a bamboo floor as it will scratch the surface. If a heavy piece of furniture needs to be dragged from one area of the floor to another, then a blanket or towels can be placed under the piece. Always make sure floors are well swept before even sliding a blanketed item across the floor to prevent dirt from being rubbed into the surface. Felt pads can be placed on the feet of furniture as it sits on the bamboo floor surface. This will protect the floor from scratching each time a chair is slid or a piece of furniture is bumped.
Other preventative measures can be taken to keep floors scratch-free. Removing shoes before walking in the house is a custom adopted by many cultures and it is common for family members to never wear shoes in the house. This will keep the outside where it belongs, and floors cleaner. Pet owners should keep pet’s nails trimmed to avoid scratches from dogs and cats scurrying across floors.
Deep cleaning can be done with a variety of household cleaners. Mild, non-bleach cleansers are best and will not harm or dissolve the varnish or sealant. Daily (or even more often) sweeping will reduce the chances of scratching.
